Guatemalan Cortes
The Maya woman's skirt (refrajo) is commonly referred to as a 'corte'.  Corte comes from the verb cortar, meaning 'to cut'.  The fabric is a cut (or length) of cloth which is typically handwoven on a foot powered treadle loom.  Though the styles vary, the most common are floor length and tube shaped, worn tightly wrapped around the hips and secured at the waist with a sash.  Because most cortes are simply large, flat pieces of fabric, they are commonly used for many different projects such as; clothing, curtains, upholstery, etc. For more infomation regarding Guatemalan textiles click here.
